Community Event: Woodcock Watch, Bedminster

February 26, 2018 Turpin Real Estate

On Sunday, March 11, join the Raritan Headwaters Association for a Woodcock Watch at Fairview Farm in Bedminster. The 6:30pm presentation from naturalist Alan Rennie about these quirky birds will be followed by a guided hike to two of Fairview Farm’s meadows, which serve as popular Woodcock singing fields. This event is free, with an option to donate to at the door.

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology describes the species this way: “Superbly camouflaged against the leaf litter, the brown-mottled American Woodcock walks slowly along the forest floor, probing the soil with its long bill in search of earthworms. Unlike its coastal relatives, this plump little bird lives in young forests and shrubby old fields across eastern North America. Its cryptic plumage and low-profile behavior make it hard to find except in the springtime at dawn or dusk, when the males show off for females by giving loud, nasal peent calls and performing dazzling aerial displays.”

Fairview Farm is located at 2121 Larger Cross Road in Bedminster. For additional information, call 908-234-1852 or register online.

The Raritan Headwaters Association covers a 470 square-mile area encompassing the headwaters region of the Raritan River Basin. A leading voice for clean water in New Jersey, the organization’s water quality, education, stewardship and land preservation programs effectively serve the region’s citizens.
