A visit to Tewksbury, NJ, featuring The Magic Shop and the Tewksbury Inn

April 13, 2017 Turpin Real Estate

Welcome to the first installment of Pairings by Turpin:  Bite-sized Itineraries Around North Central New Jersey. It’s a feature we’ll post occasionally to highlight two of the local places and people who make life here so grand, providing the destination for an afternoon’s stay-cation right in your own magnificent back yard.

Spring unofficially arrives in the charming village of Oldwick (Tewksbury Township) when The Magic Shop opens its beloved “Rabbit Hole”. Generations of children and their parents welcome the season by visiting the shop’s fanciful and diminutive dioramas, which are tucked away in the shop like a secret garden.  Up a little ladder they climb, then down a slippery slide in the hollow of an old tree, to arrive at the bunny’s underground burrow, where all manner of critter cavort in their tiny tableaux. This year marks the 69th anniversary of the Rabbit Hole.

The Rabbit Hole closes on April 22 until next year, but children and and adults alike are rewarded with a visit any time to appreciate the boutique’s eclectic offerings, ranging from fine art and antiques, beautiful and nostalgic toys, handmade gift items and unique clothing.  Situated in an antique home dating to the 1700s, The Magic Shop has been an Oldwick landmark since 1947. Profits benefit Bonnie Brae, a residential treatment center for adolescent boys in nearby Liberty Corner.

The historic Tewksbury Inn has been serving travelers in this bucolic village since the 18th century.  Located a country block away from the Magic Shop, “The Tewks,” as it’s known to locals, still delights today with its seasonal menus, renowned wine list (notably a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence), a fine selection of craft beers and locally sourced provisions, including from neighboring Melick’s Farm.  The outdoor patio overlooks the quaint downtown, and is lovely for lunch.  In the evening it’s mesmerizing by the light of antique gas-flame lanterns, with the new outdoor bar. It’s perfect year round, in fact; pair it with a trip to the Magic Shop in spring, or apple picking Melicks Town Farm in the fall, or a Sunday Drive any time.
