Edgar Holden Topic of Chatham Historical Society Lecture this Sunday
The Chatham Historical Society presents Dr. Sandra Moss on Sunday, May 17, from 2 to 4 PM at the Chatham Township Municipal Building. Dr. Moss’ topic is “A Jersey Surgeon’s Civil War: Life and Death on the Ironclad Monitor.” The Municipal Building is located at 58 Meyersville Road.
A onetime resident of Chatham, Edgar Holden entered the Union Navy as a medical officer during the Civil War after graduating from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He witnessed the Battle of the Monitor and the Merrimack in Virginia, and was present at other engagements. Later he became a prominent Newark physician. His summer residence was at 55 Southern Boulevard in Chatham Township.
Dr. Sandra Moss is a retired internist with a master’s degree in the history of medicine from Rutgers University. In addition to her lecture on Edgar Holden, she will reflect on 19th century medicine and the medical history of New Jersey. Admission to this lecture is free.
