Community Event: Jockey Hollow Encampment Weekend, Morristown

April 16, 2018 Turpin Real Estate

The Revolutionary Era comes to life this weekend in Morristown when this time period is recreated by Continental soldier re-enactors. Jockey Hollow, which served at George Washington’s military outpost in Morristown, will host this National Historic Site’s Annual Encampment Weekend on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22 from 10am to 4pm. A free event, it is open to the public and will feature soldiers demonstrating their use of muskets and sharing information about their uniforms, weapons, rations and military gear.

The host unit for this event is the 2nd New Jersey Regiment, a group of volunteers dedicated to portraying the men and women of the 2nd New Jersey Regiment during the Revolutionary War for American Independence. Through living history displays and battlefield reenactments, the regiment educates the public and honors those they depict.

Seven blizzards in December alone at Jockey Hollow’s winter encampment of 1779-80 meant that soldiers endured a season more severe than Valley Forge where thousands died. Yet only about a 100 soldiers at Morristown did not see the spring of 1780. 900 acres of Jockey Hollow timber, notched together and chinked with clay, made the army’s winter quarters– 12 soldiers in each of 1,000 14 x 16 huts– where the men made do with a trickle of rations and beds of loose straw.

Jockey Hollow is part of the Morristown National Historical Park and is located on Tempe Wick Road in Morristown.
