Community Event: Summer Barn Tour in Tewksbury

July 11, 2016 Turpin Real Estate

Whether you love animals or architecture, the Summer Barn Tour is a not-to-be-missed occasion in Tewksbury on Sunday, July 17. A rain or shine event, the tour takes place from 10AM to 4PM and highlights some of the most unique barns in the area. Jointly sponsored by the Tewksbury Trail Association and the Tewksbury Historical Society, tickets are $20 each, or $5 each for children 12 and under. Tickets can be reserved with payment or purchased the day of the tour, while available. Pick up or purchase tickets at Christie Hoffman Farm Park at 108 Fairmount Road West/Route 512.

Plan to tour six barns, most of which house horses although a few are home to alpacas, llamas, cows, goats, sheep and turkeys. Visit Desai Farms where owners produce handmade Ayurvedic herbal soap from goats’ milk, and yarn and apparel from Alpaca fibers. Dapple Grey Close, the smallest stable on the tour, has highly original architecture resembling a guest cottage. The original barn at Blue Heaven Farm was constructed in the mid-1800s, and today a new addition offers a tack room and lounge for boarders. The antique barn at By Pond Farm, empty for many years, is now bustling with animal life amid breathtakingly landscaped grounds. Both the original antique barn and the new riding facility at the mountaintop Hart Farm are open for the tour. Although it’s new, the workshop barn on Orchard Lane is airy and bright while incorporating features that look antique.

Special exhibits on this year’s Barn Tour include equine paintings by Barbara Hornstra; countryside photo note cards and prints by Susan E. Pederson of Black-eyed Susan Fine Art and Photography, Sue Kenney of Le Reve Gallery in Chester; and horse books by Tewksbury author Loren Spiotta-DiMare.
